Public education requires public trust, and public trust requires ethical leadership. The Board of
Trustees should represent the community with integrity, professionalism, transparency, ethical
conduct, and accountability. Board decisions must be based on what best serves students,
employees, schools, and the district as a whole, not individual personalities, relationships, political
interests, or personal agendas. Restoring professionalism to the Board means establishing and
maintaining clear ethical standards, respecting established policies and procedures, promoting
appropriate Board conduct, and holding every member accountable to the responsibilities of public
service. There must also be a willingness to identify and address personal, political, or undisclosed
agendas that interfere with sound governance. Decisions involving students, personnel, finances,
policies, and the future of Colleton County Schools should be made openly, responsibly, and based
on facts and the district’s needs, not outside interests or individual agendas. Greater transparency
surrounding district priorities, spending, performance, and decision-making is essential to
strengthening public confidence and rebuilding trust between the Board and the community. Effective
governance also requires a clear understanding that the Board governs, and the superintendent
manages. Board members should provide oversight, establish policy, set expectations, and hold the
superintendent accountable without attempting to manage the district’s day-to-day operations. The
focus must remain on service, not self-interest; governance, not personal agendas; and progress, not politics.
