Every student deserves a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment. School safety, student
well-being, discipline, and equitable access to educational opportunities must remain important
components of district policy. Policies should promote safe schools while ensuring students are
treated fairly and provided with the resources and support necessary to succeed. Decisions
concerning safety, discipline, student services, and educational opportunities should be informed by
reliable data and implemented consistently. Every student may not begin at the same starting point,
which makes it important to identify barriers and ensure students have meaningful access to the
programs, resources, instruction, and support necessary to reach their potential.
Leadership should also model the standards expected of students. Even when disagreements occur,
Board members and district leaders should demonstrate professionalism, civility, collaboration,
empathy, and respect. Differences of opinion should never prevent adults from working together in the best interests of children.
